The first is the method that Ukrainians use for creating what they call "pysanky": trace designs on the egg with hot wax, dip in dye, trace more designs with hot wax, dip in darker dye, etc. In the second method, which seems to be peculiar to Lithuania, the artist dyes the egg first and then scratches the patterns into the colored egg with a tiny knife. See http://www.lithaz.org/arts/eggs/lit/methods.html for a summary.

I've tried the wax method a few times. It's the SCA-wide group for people interested in Eastern Europe -- from Kievan Rus to the Balkans, and including Lithuania, Poland and the Baltic region. There is a mailing list, too. Here are the links:

http://slavic.freeservers.com/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sig/

SIG people are very supportive of each other's efforts. I'm relatively new to the SCA (haven't officially joined yet, but I've been apart of a baby group in Athens for the past 3 years) and I'm trying to do a Lithuanian persona. I come from the Bendzunas family (from upstate New York and later Chesapeake, Virginia) and wanted to because my mom instilled in me a strong respect for my heritage. Up until yesterday, I thought I was the only one pursuing Lithuania in the SCA, because no one around here knew of anyone. But I'm glad to find out I'm far from being the only one.
